CHANGING THE WORLD WITH ONE ACT OF KINDNESS AT A TIME

Mission 69 – Bikes and Computers and Deaf students – PhilippinesWe feel incredibly fortunate to have received generous funding from Dean Spicer of Recips Electrical and BNI Peak Performance, which allowed us to purchase 40 bicycles for students in dire need. Many of these young scholars were walking more than 10 kilometres to school every day and this small act of kindness is truly life-changing for them. With these bicycles, they can now spend more time with their families and focus on their studies, all while fostering a sense of pride and independence. Also a huge note of thanks to Ludwig Castillo of ELBI BISIKLETA AKSESORIS BIKE SHOP – Lopes Ave, Los Banos for their generous support.

During our recent presentation, both parents and grandparents attended to witness this special moment. Each student signed an agreement prepared by the school, committing to keep the bicycles in good condition for future use. The school has even set up designated bike storage areas across all three campuses to ensure the bikes are cared for properly.

One of the most touching moments came from a group of deaf students who surprised us with an impromptu signing song presentation when we delivered ten of the bicycles. Their joy and talent were truly moving and it left a lasting impression on all of us. After the presentation, I felt compelled to ask Jhun, our government representative, what more we could do for these extraordinary students – none of whom received a bike.

When we returned to the school and spoke with their teacher, I was struck by her response. She laughed and mentioned that the boys desperately needed deodorant, as they often arrived at school without enough time to freshen up after working to support their families. This brought laughter and a sense of camaraderie among the staff and from this light-hearted moment sprang a heartfelt decision: we would provide backpacks for each of the students. These backpacks would not only include deodorant but also coloured pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners and two fresh white T-shirts.

As I reflect on this mission, several moments break my heart:

One boy, traveling 20 kilometres to school, comes from a broken and violent family and currently lives with his grandfather. He had no shoes, so we purchased a pair for him. My sister was so moved by his story that she bought a second pair, one size up for when he grows.

Another boy faced embarrassment when his teacher asked why he wore his shirt inside out. He explained that he didn’t have time to wash it, as he rushed from school straight to work to help support his family. At just 12 years old, this child carries burdens far heavier than any of us can imagine.

We are also extremely grateful to be able to present 2 refurbished a laptops, generously donated by Boyd McLaws of Californian Enterprises and Potter Industries Melbourne. One of  which was presented to the teacher of the deaf children. Her tears of gratitude conveyed the profound impact this resource will have, as the school cannot afford such technologies.

As I draft this message, I am overwhelmed with sadness that more cannot be done. The lack of government assistance means that much of the responsibility falls on the teachers and generous donors to provide for the children’s needs. Each act of kindness, no matter how small, has the power to transform lives.

Thank you for your unwavering support. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of all children. “Changing lives with one act of kindness at a time”.
